Bessie Surtees House is the name of two merchants’ houses which were built in the 16th and 17th century. Bessie Surtees was the daughter of a Newcastle Banker and lived in this house in the 18th century. In 1772 she eloped with John Scott, who later became the 1st Earl of Eldon. The top photo shows how the building looked in . The bottom photo shows the same building looking relatively unchanged in the present day. This is an example of how some aspects of the Quayside have remianed unchanged for centuries.
